Jain for Governor Campaign Announces Pick for Lieutenant Governor
Lifelong Marylander LaTrece Hawkins Lytes joins Ashwani Jain’s campaign
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — On January 13th, the Jain for Governor campaign announced the addition of lifelong Marylander LaTrece Hawkins Lytes to the historic ticket as the candidate for Lieutenant Governor. If Jain and Lytes are elected, they will bring a new energy to the highest offices in our state and will be focused on implementing specific policies to help all Marylanders.
“My family and I are really just your average, typical Maryland family. We work hard and try to make ends meet while taking care of each other. We don’t have fancy titles or big political connections. But we do best by our God, our family and our community,” said LaTrece Hawkins Lytes. “And until recently, we never thought about getting into politics. But then I met Ashwani Jain, and I started to feel hopeful. His work in making our politics more inclusive and accessible — for regular people like you and me — is so inspiring and I’m honored to be his running mate.”
Lytes is a lifelong Marylander who was born in Baltimore and raised in Landover in Prince George’s County. She is a wife, a mother of four, a Juvenile Type 1 Diabetes survivor, a transplant recipient, and a community activist. She has worked in advocacy roles with University of Maryland Medical Center, Maryland Endocrine, the First Baptist Church of Highland Park, and the American Diabetes Association.
“LaTrece Hawkins Lytes is the ideal choice for my campaign’s lieutenant governor candidate, and I couldn’t be more excited to have her on the Jain for Governor team,” said Ashwani Jain. “Lytes understands the everyday challenges that Marylanders across the state face and has experience working with individuals and organizations in community service roles. Her dedication to improving the lives of those around her and lifting up the voices of others is paramount to this campaign. I look forward to working with her and becoming the next Governor and Lt. Governor of Maryland.”
The Jain for Governor campaign has two main objectives. The first is to make Maryland’s state government more representative, transparent, and accountable by focusing on inclusion, banning corruption, and ensuring equal access. The second is to take a comprehensive approach to solving Maryland’s issues by focusing on a “Relief, Recovery and Reform” agenda. Since January 2021, the campaign has publicly shared over 150 detailed policies — all of which were created by Maryland residents who will be impacted by those policies.
The campaign is one of the largest grassroots campaigns in Maryland and the first statewide campaign in the U.S. to be 100% volunteer-run, crowdsource policy, and limit the influence of money by making all events free.
